Heather-ApplebaumDr. Heather Appelbaum is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. She received her medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and completed internship and residency in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Appelbaum is currently an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. She practices gynecology for women and children and specializes in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and pediatric pelvic reconstructive surgery.

She is the director of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York. She is the founder and director of the PURE (Pediatric Urogenital, Reproductive, and Endocrine) Disorders program, a multidisciplinary comprehensive health care team dedicated to diagnosis and treatment of disorders of sex development. Dr. Appelbaum has specialized in pediatric gynecologic surgery and pediatric pelvic reconstructive surgery for complex congenital anomalies of the reproductive tract since 2009. Under the umbrella of pediatric and adolescent gynecologic services, she has developed a comprehensive dilation program for patients with vaginal agenesis and vaginal stenosis, including access to social services and support groups. She has coordinated multi- and interdisciplinary clinical meetings, educational events, and patient-centered care on behalf of patients with disorders of sex development to promote professional knowledge and patient access to comprehensive care. She has worked with community providers, improved clinical services, and served in teaching and advisory roles both locally and nationally on behalf of patients with disorders of sex development.

She is particularly interested in complex congenital anomalies of the reproductive tract and has lectured locally and nationally on these topics. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and an active member of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. She serves on several committees for both organizations, including as a consultant on the ACOG Committee on Adolescent Health Care. She is section editor for the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology and has had multiple publications on topics related to Müllerian anomalies, abnormal female pubertal development, ovarian masses in children, ovarian torsion, menstrual irregularities, and gynecologic concerns for children with cancer. She is involved in research endeavors on quality indicators for children with disorders of sex development and other congenital anomalies of the reproductive organs and serves on the leadership and anatomy and surgical working groups for the Disorders of Sex Development Translational Research Network.
