What are Pediatric Gynecologists?
Pediatric gynecologists are doctors who are trained and board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Pediatric gynecologists specialize in treating infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with gynecological problems. The problems that children experience are different from the issues encountered by adults. Pediatric gynecologists are trained to diagnose and treat birth defects of the reproductive tract, genital trauma, ovarian masses and ovarian torsion, pubertal developmental issues, irregular bleeding, menstrual difficulties, and vulvovaginal disorders in children. Pediatric gynecologists have particular expertise in understanding how childhood illness can affect future pubertal development, body image, sexual functioning, fertility, and reproduction, including pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
